Marble Chess Sets
One of the more underrated materials for chess sets is marble. That is really too bad. Marble is one of the most unigue materials that can be used.
What makes marble so special is that there are no two pieces of marble alike. There is a base color (green, black, tan, etc.) and then 2-3 (or more) shades of that color that are then streaked and speckled throughout. The pattern is natural and unpredictable.
Typically, marble chess sets are created in the popular Staunton design. While it is a stable material for playing chess, it is not one that can be used to create highly detailed chess pieces - really its only downfall.
Even with the chess set being shaped in the popular Staunton shape, the unique coloring of marble prevents one chess set from being any identical to another. You know when you have a marble chess set that you are getting your own one-of-a-kind for your chess playing.
